Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy simply means ‘Therapy using Aromas’
Aromatherapy can be traced back several 1000’s of years. Many ancient cultures including the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians have all at some time in their history used aromatherapy.
The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended the use of fragrant oils for bathing and massage.
Hippocrates the father of modern medicine also used aromatherapy baths and scented massage.
Although the original use of aromatic oils dates back to ancient times, as is presently defined aromatherapy involves the use of distilled plant volatiles - a twentieth century innovation.
The current interest in natural plant oils began in the 1930’s when the French chemist Rene Gatefosse was badly burnt whist working in the family perfume laboratory, burnt and in pain he plunged his hand into the nearest available liquid, this liquid happened to be a bowl of neat lavender oil. Not only did the burn heal very quickly, it left no scaring; impressed and curious by the rapid healing Gatefosse began to research the healing properties of other natural plant oils. During World War 2 the interest in oils was further perused in France by Dr Jean Valnet, a medical doctor who effectively used a variety
of what had by now become known as Essential oils to treat wounded soldiers.
It was at around the same time Austrian biochemist Marguerite was developing the use of essential oils together with Massage techniques. With the development of antibiotics, and chemical antiseptics the use of essential oils was pushed to the background for many years.
Today however Aromatherapy has gained increased popularity around the world, not only in the field of complementary medicine, but also within orthodox medicine where its benefits are growing and proving increasingly popular within many aspects of nursing and palliative care. Aromatherapy Massage is a natural treatment which uses the concentrated energies contained within essential plant oils in association with gentle, relaxing flowing massage.
The volatiles used in Aromatherapy Massage come from oils obtained from the plant kingdom – flowers, fruits, berries, seeds, leaves, wood, resin, and roots - these oils are collectively known as Essential oils. Essential oils are usually extracted from source by means of a process known as steam distillation, or by maceration. It can take large amounts of the raw material to produce just a few drops of essential oil; the yield is so small from some plant sources that the end product can be extremely expensive and highly valued. Each Essential oil has a distinct fragrance and contains a unique therapeutic quality. Individual oils comprise of an exclusive combination of biochemical components, each offering a precious healing property. The range and uses of essential oils is vast - some oils are antiseptic, others have anti viral and anti biotic properties helping to combat infection. There are oils with anti inflammatory qualities, and many are useful in helping to stimulate, detoxify and aid the body’s lymphatic system, in addition there are the more familiar oils like Lavender, and Chamomile well known and documented for their calming, relaxing virtues. The expanding field of Complementary and Holistic medicine now recognises the important link between mind and body, Aromatherapy Massage takes this link into account when offering treatment. Stress and negative thought patterns are individual to each person, and no two people react the same to a given situation. If not dealt with stress builds, and in turn contributes to the overall weakening of the bodily systems, often manifesting as physical symptoms. Aromatherapy Massage simultaneously works to balance the mind and the body - The use of carefully selected essential oils has a dual effect; the oils are absorbed through the skin into the blood stream working directly on aches, pains, and physical symptoms, while the inhaled aroma acts directly on the brain, having a psychological effect. When Essential oils are blended and combined with a Base or Carrier oil such as Almond oil, Coconut oil, Olive oil etc they can be administered to the skin using a range of gentle, relaxing, soothing massage techniques to bring about a feeling of well being and relaxation. In addition to the oils selected, the massage techniques improve the circulation of blood and lymph, lower the respiration rate and blood pressure, and thereby dissipate the adverse affects of bodily imbalances, and the accumulation of impurities. The main aim of Aromatherapy Massage as a complementary treatment is to address stress and the interrelated aspects.
